On Monday, October 17th, 64 detainees in Cuenca's penitentiary began their studies in business administration for the October 2016 – February 207 semester thanks to the university's branch in Cuenca.

The new students were divided into two groups for their own comfort; the first group began with Applied Computing classes, which is given by professor Juan Pablo Vasquez, while the second group started with Oral and Written Techniques classes, given by professor Carlos Ordoñez. These classes will last 5 weeks from1:30pm to 5:30pm; the students will have to comply with the university's academic regulations despite having class in the penitentiary.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Paul Tobar, director of the penitentiary, Cesar Vasquez, the university's vice president in Cuenca, Maria Fernanda Guevara, director the business administration major, Jorge Fernandez, director of the project, and professors.

Paul Tobar thanked UPS and its professors for having taken the challenge of giving detainees the opportunity to study. He invited the new students to take advantage of this opportunity and to pursue a professional degree.

In her speech, Maria Fernanda Guevara said "It is always a pleasure to be around students because this is our calling. All professors will do their best so that you benefit from their teaching".

Cesar Vasquez was pleased that classes started and told students that they have all the rights and obligations of a UPS student. "It is only up to you to end your studies successfully and hopefully in four years we can graduate all 64 students who are here today to reach their goal"
