On 2011, professor Augusto Rodriguez created the Salesian Group "Literature in Movement" whose aim is to encourage literature in peripheral areas of Guayaquil thanks to UPS students. Now, the group started a program titled "Libros Cartoneros" to encourage literature with recyclable and cardboard books.

15 students who major in communication, industrial and computer engineering are taking part of the project. This idea began in Argentina in 2001 when a bank crisis hit the country. "It's a different way of making a book, in this case with recyclable material. This activity has expanded throughout the world.

The books are made of cardboard and are filled with students' creativity. Besides writing the books, students should also print them, collect the material (cardboard) and be creative to make it an authentic book. "The final product is aimed at common readers, high and university students", said Rodriguez.

One of the educational aims of this program is to promote art, imagination and of course reading UPS student Gabriel Fuentes told El Telegrafo newspaper that this activity is a good experience because it not only represents a grade, it's an activity they haven't done before.

The group is currently preparing the official presentation of the books to the entire university community.
