Students who are members of the Ecology Club in the university's branch campus in Quito, along with public institutions such as the Ecuadorian Red Cross and the Municipality of Quito, celebrated World Health Day by holding several activities.

World Health Day is celebrated on April 7th; for this year's celebration students organized conferences on topics like HIV and sexually transmitted diseases and health problems caused by environmental pollution. There were also blood donation campaigns and medical check ups.

The aim of the event was to create environmental awareness in the university community, especially social factors and health such as lifestyles that directly influence the incidence of diseases.

For Ronald Correa, coordinator of the ecology club,  it is necessary to create events in the university community with "activities that foster caring for the environment and health, as well as discuss social problems".

Professor Cecilia Barba thinks public and environmental health should correlate in order to avoid different illnesses, since illnesses are caused due to people's lifestyles such as the consumption of junk food or because of packages that do not have biodegradable characteristics and therefore harm the environment.
