Politecnica Salesiana University is the overall winner of the 4th edition of the International Robotics Competition "Latitud Zero" which was held in the interactive science museum in the city of Quito from the 16th to the 20th of May. The university's branch campuses from Guayaquil and Cuenca worked together for this competition.

This is the first time an Ecuadorian university becomes the overall winner; in past editions it was Mexican universities that won the overall championship. This is a remarkable victory  that demonstrates the hard work carried out by our students.

There were 32 categories in this competition, the Ecuadorian universities that took part in the competition were: Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas (ESPE), Universidad Técnica Equinoccial (UTE), Universidad de las Américas (UDLA), Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN), Universidad nacional de Chimborazo (UNACH), Universidad Técnica de Ambato (UTA). The international universities were: Tecnológico Nacional Campus Poza Rica (Mexico), Universidad Nacional de Trujillo (Peru), Grupo de Robótica Old School Team (Colombia) and Instituto Cardenal Stepinac de Educación Urbana (Argentina).

25 UPS students from the robotics club, guided by professors Freddy Rivera and Paul Chasi.  attended the competition. This was the second international competition attended by the robotics club from Cuenca, they won 2nd and 3rd place in Tryta Mexico.

Professor Rivera said the reason they won this overall competition is because of students' perseverance and the experience they gained in last year's competition in Mexico.
"These are the results of years of hard work with students from the club", said Victor Huilcapi, director of the electronic and automation school. Thanks to strategic alliance of the robotic clubs from Cuenca and Guayaquil, UPS won first place and became the first Ecuadorian university to win this international tournament.

"As always, we are very thankful for all the support and trust given to us by the officials of our university", said Byron Lima, coordinator of the robotics club in Guayaquil.
In this competition, UPS obtained 15 accreditations for the tournament titled "ROBOTCHALLENGE" which will take place in Romania in November; they will also participate in similar events in Mexico and in a national event titled "Reto del Pacifico" which will take place in Guayaquil from 4th to the 7th of October.
