Miguel Campaña, a graduate of electrical engineering from the university's branch campus in Quito, has won a scholarship to present his research project in the Spring School On Networks in Pucon, Chile.

His paper titled "Optimal Placement of Universal Data Aggregation Points for Smart Electric Metering based on Hybrid Wireless" suggests the creation of smart meters that enable the data of electricity consumption to be sent through two types of networks, Wi-Fi and Cell phones, and provide a map that guarantees the constant coverage of the meters.

The aim of the project, which was also carried out by professors Esteban Inga (UPS) and Roberto Hincapie (Universidad Politécnica Bolivariana de Medellin), is to reduce the use of data aggregation points as much as possible by making a map that reduces the cost of the technology that is used in the process.

As Esteban Inga, the coordinator of the GIREI Research Group and the director of the electrical engineering undergraduate program explained, the result obtained by Miguel Campaña is due to the strategies implemented by the undergraduate program in order to get its students involved in research projects.

The event was attended by researchers from several Latin American countries and Europe, there were presentations, lectures, posters and mentoring for pre and post graduate students on Smart Cities.
