The natural resources biotechnology undergraduate program in the university's branch campus in Cuenca signed an agreement with the production association in the district of "El Valle" in order to carry out a social and human development project. The aim of this agreement is to hold workshops on the use, management and implementation of 30 biodigestors for agro producing associations in "El Valle". By having this technology, they will be able to process organic material to obtain natural fertilizers.

There were 20 students and professors from the natural resources biotechnology undergraduate program working hard in order to meet this aim.

After carrying out an analysis, it was necessary to adapt the design of the biodigestors to the conditions of these regions. The commonly used biodigestors are installations that seek to reduce investment costs and assure a sustainable production of BIOL.

With the guidance of professors Hernán Avilés, Myriam Mancheno, Inés Malo, and Jhison Romero, the students were able to get positive results from this project. BIOL is considered an organic source capable of promoting physiological activities and stimulating the development of plants. By using BIOL, we contribute to the care of all the basic elements of the planet, such as soil and water, as well as optimizing the management of economic resources, since we work with a low budget compared to other fertilizers.

The researchers noted that the physical-chemical analyzes carried out in the laboratory of Analytical Chemistry at UPS, especially the result of the pH of the BIOL, indicated that the BIOL produced can be used safely. UPS experts suggest gradually increasing the doses of BIOL and periodically repeating its application to the selected field to increase its effectiveness.

They emphasized that this project was developed thanks to the economic contribution of the UPS and the autonomous government of "El Valle".
