The paper "On the effects of pilot-aided channel estimation on the capacity of QoS-aware heterogeneous OFDMA networks" written by UPS professor and research Andres Ortega was awarded the Best Paper Award in the 13th International Conference on Communications (MICC 2017) held in Malaysia.

Andres Ortega, a member of the Telecommunications and Telematics Research Group (GITEL for its acronym in Spanish Grupo de Investigación en Telecomunicaciones y Telemática (GITEL)) at UPS, said the paper is part of his doctoral research and the result of the contribution of Universidad de Ferrara – Italy (UNIFE). The co author of the paper is Velio Tralli from the department of telecommunications engineering in UNIFE.

During the same conference, professor Ortega and Brayan Peñafiel presented the paper titled "A joint multilevel modulator and robust LDPC codes Processing over Optical Systems by providing solutions for holistic 5G backhaul". This paper is on the latest generation communications networks to support the new infrastructure of hybrid networks Fiber over Wireless (FiWi).

UPS researchers said their participation contributes to the evaluation of the work and the objectives set out in GITEL, particularly in Asia where the current leaders of the telecommunications market and the global technological development are located.

"The world of wireless communications continues to develop and the scientific community generates increasingly promising contributions in order to adopt the standards for the latest 5G mobile communications technology", said Ortega.
