Environmental engineering celebrated its 15th anniversary

The environmental engineering undergraduate program in the university's branch campus in Cuenca celebrated its 15th anniversary with several activities that were attended by alumni, students, professors, administrative staff and special guests. During the formal ceremony UPS officials awarded special recognitions to professors, the first faculty director, the first graduates and current students.

Miryan Loaiza, director of this undergraduate program, welcomed people to the ceremony and spoke about the work carried out by this program throughout these years to benefit students. She acknowledged professor Fredi Portilla as a fundamental part of having created this program. Professor Portilla spoke about how the program started and how it is today, he praised professors and directors for their work. Professor Ernesto Delgado presented the complete story of the program which began in 2002 with only 20 students, now it has 300 and is equipped with up to date technology labs. 

UPS president Javier Herrán, spoke about the achievements and the work carried out to support sustainable development of our world. "The program must be the catalyst for the environmental awareness of all students at UPS, laying the foundations of an education for sustainable development, must positively impact to change attitudes, live values and create practices to enhance culture environmentalist" he said.

The anniversary was celebrated throughout the week with different activities: mass, conferences with topics related to the environment, and a soccer championship. The closing of the festivities took place with the traditional "Noche Cuencana", the presentation of the Traditional Dance group and the burning of a castle with fireworks.
