UPS president Javier Herran held a conference in the School of Industrial Organization (EOI for its acronym in Spanish Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI)) in Spain to talk about social and solidarity based economy, he spoke about his experience in Cayambe, Ecuador. His participation was part of the school's social program in order to encourage social changes.

Adolfo Cazorla, director of the EOI, said UPS is part of RedTIKAL: technology, innovation and knowledge in Latin America (RedTIKAL: Tecnología, Innovación y Conocimiento en América Latina), an organization promoted by EOI to encourage the creation and transfer of knowledge between education and research institutions in Latin America.

Javier Herran focused on the need to have a new economy based on solidarity and not accumulation. "Many of us are sure that the model of human relations based on corporative interest is incompatible with sustainability for a worthy life.

Herrán explained in detail the bases of this social and solidarity based economy, such as the balance between community and family or personal interest, democratic decision-making and ensuring the future of the community without losing sight of environmental sustainability.

In Cayambe, Herrán put this economic model into practice, and as president he extended these principles to all areas: "I believe in this model and I have opted to put it into practice in the University, dethroning all privileges", he said. Social and solidarity based economy "is not achieved from the institutional direction, but from the shared management in decision making agreed by the community."

Javier Herrán concluded his speech by encouraging students to "open the window of the world to other interpretations" that make another type of society and economy "centered on the human being" possible.
