Missions, indigenous communities and the Ecuadorian Amazon Region

UPS researchers from the Indigenous Communities Research Group presented their work during the 10th Ecuadorian Congress on History held in Universidad de Cuenca. 

The congress started with a talk from Father Juan Bottasso with the topic "Salesian missions in the Amazon" where he explained the arrival of salesians to Ecuador and the signing of agreements with the State to work in Gualaquiza in order to educate people in that region.

Jose Juncosa and Luis Alvarez presented "Los Shuar y el proyecto civilizatorio amazónico en la visión del misionero salesiano Carlos Crespi (1891-1982)" where they discuss the book of Carlos Crespi on the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Blas Garzón presented the topic "Relaciones y tensiones en los proyectos colonizadores: misioneros, colonos, Estado y dirigentes Shuar" and explained the interests and needs that forced people from the province of Azuay to migrate.

Finally, Angel Torres and Angelica Almeida presented the topic "Análisis de producción fotográfica y obras audiovisuales de misiones salesianas en la región amazónica". A study based on photographic and audiovisual products of salesian missions in the Ecuadorian Amazon between 1888 and 2007.

Other guest speakers were Antonia Manresa, Wilson Gutiérrez-Marín, Galo Sarmiento y Cecilia Ortiz.
