On February 7th and 8th our branch campus in Guayaquil held the 5th edition of the Congress on Science, Technology and Innovation for Society (CITIS 2019), an academic and scientific event that brought together national and international researchers so they can present their work in the field of technology and innovation in order to improve people's quality of life.

Universidad Politecnica Salesiana (UPS) president, Javier Herran attended the inauguration along with Andres Bayolo, vice president of UPS's branch campus in Guayaquil; Jessica Lavayen, director of the National Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT for its acronym in Spanish); Juan Pablo Salgado, Head of Research at UPS; Vicente Parra Vega, director of the research and advanced studies center (Mexico); Luis Alvarez, general editor; and Pablo Perez, coordinator of research in Guayaquil.

Javier Herran spoke about the importance of research conducted by students and professors of higher education institutions. "CITIS is made up by a great number of research groups which are made up by professors and students", he said. 

Juan Pablo Salgado, Head of Research, delivered the first keynote speech titled "Management of Knowledge in the University-Ecosystem". "Knowledge can be produced by interacting with other people, it is necessary to co-produce knowledge, we need to feed on ideas from other people. Knowledge cannot be produced alone", he said.

Vicente Parra Vega, representative of of the Research and Advanced Studies Center from Mexico, presented the talk "Basic and applied research in mechatronics for the study of new generation robots".

There were also workshops led by experts from Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador.
