Universidad Politecnica Salesiana (UPS), Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE), la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) and the Municipality of Quito signed an agreement to carry out the project titled "Ciudadela Universitaria Campus Quito".

The proposal is that around 50,000 students from the three universities have access to eco – efficient, green and safe public spaces where pedestrians are a priority; the idea is also to foster sustainable mobility. The ceremony was attended by Jorge Yunda, Mayor of Quito; Fernando Ponce, president of PUCE; Florinella Muñoz, president of EPN; Javier Herran, president of UPS; and Fernando Calle, PUCE.

"The proposal is made up of two main projects, Plaza de las Focas, which will be a connection point with the city's metro system; and Plaza de las Universidades". "The Municipality will be responsible for the construction, technical direction and administration. Each university will provide support in order to have environmental sustainability".

Muñoz spoke about the benefit of cooperating in academic and social fields. "Our work as universities is to generate knowledge and we want to become a type of laboratory in the city, where we can find solutions", he said.

Father Javier Herran spoke about the importance of the project in relation to the concept of university – common good. "The three universities understand their students must take part in research and care for nature, culture and coexistence", he said.

Finally, the Mayor said this project is a great opportunity to work together with academia. "The municipality is here to strengthen this joint work and hope we can soon inaugurate "Campus Quito", he said.
