Civil engineering students from our branch campus in Guayaquil took part in the conference on the importance of civil engineering, which explained the main functions of engineering in society.

The aim was to present people's experience on civil engineering, its characteristics, importance within society and application in urban and rural areas.

During the conference, freshmen students learned about the meaning of civil engineering, works carried out by civil engineers, difference between geology and geotechnical work,  road, sanitary, airport and underground works, work methodology of a civil engineer that goes from the design, construction, inspection and maintenance of construction sites.

Pedro Peña, director of the civil engineering undergraduate program, believes that these extra curricular activities provide students a sense of belonging to the profession they have chosen by showing them the real applications of civil engineering. "Speakers also presented examples of international works and the advanced technology currently being used. They also spoke different types of errors that should be avoided in works", said Peña.

The conference was led by Blas Cruz, civil engineer and representative of Cevaconsult company, who spoke about how this profession is not only applied to construction but to maintenance, control and operation of buildings. It is a joint work to plan and design environments.

For Francoisse Romero, civil engineering freshman student, the conferences are a way to strengthen students' professional education. "It's positive because it helps us in our development as civil engineers", he said
