UPS professors Ricardo González, Mónica Huerta, Giovanni Sagbay, Roger Clotet, Diana Rivas, Ana Pérez and Esteban Ordoñez from the electronic engineering major at UPS-Cuenca, took part in the 2015 IEEE Colombia Conference on Communications and Computing and presented their article titled "Structural Health Monitoring using WifiPhones-Study of the network power consumption using simulation models".

Several representatives from Latin American universities attended this conference which took place in Popayán, Colombia.

The paper presented by UPS professors explains the practical analysis done to a civil structure from which that help them obtain very clear information regarding the structural behavior. This information is then used to measure the vibration movement and thus learn about the changes in the structure's dynamic properties.

Once the results from the research are obtained, the structural strenght of the buildings are evaluated in order to verify if there is any alteration due to some change in its behavior, which may be associated to a symptom that potentially represents a risk to the structure.  They also said that with current technology of wireless sensory networks WSN, there is the possibility of lowering the cost of electronic tools which allow studies of Structural Health Monitoring SHM.
