Every two years, the Cuban Higher Education Ministry and Cuban Universities hold an international congress on higher education; this year the congress was titled "Universidad 2016".

The event which was held from the 15 to the 19 of February in Habana, Cuba, had over 1000 speakers. One of the speakers was UPS President Father Javier Herrán, who spoke about the university's philosophy, his talk was titled "Innovative University for sustainable development"

"We understand innovation as the creation of opportunities that students have to transform knowledge by implementing a non-traditional system" said Father Herrán, who focused his talk on the work Universidad Politécnica Salesiana does to create innovative places within the institution.

According to Father Herrán something that is worth highlighting after visiting Cuba, is how the university has been able to prioritize values over politics during all these years. This is something that makes us reflect and make an effort to be better salesians and people.

It is also important to highlight that UPS works hard to reach its goals and improve internally and externally. Father Herrán values the effort made by the university to build this improvement process with its two most important parts, professors and students.
