Professors Marcelo García, Alexander Águila, Diego Carrión and Esteban Inga, members of the Smart Electricity Networks Research Group- GIREI (Grupo de investigación GIREI – Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes), presented their research during the 51st International University Power Engineering Conference, UPEC 2016 that was held in Portugal from the 6th to the 9th of September. The papers presented in this conference will be indexed to the IEEE scientific data bases, Xplore, Scopus and others.

UPEC is a great forum of international conferences where scientists, researchers, doctorate students and engineers from all over the world have the opportunity to present, review and discuss the latest advances in electrical engineering. In this year's event, there were people from over 50 countries.

UPS professor in Quito, Alexander Aguila Téllez, presented two papers that were produced by GIREI. The first titled ""Optimal Geographical Placement of Phasor Measurement Units based on Clustering Techniques" which proposes a geo-referenced identification for the optimal location of PMUs in the Ecuadorian Electric System, which contributes to the country. The PMUs are meters that are used in electrical power systems to quantify the status. The authors of this paper are: Diego Carrion, Esteban Inga (UPS); Roberto Hincapie, George W. González, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB), Medellin, Colombia.

The second paper titled "Analysis of Voltage Profile to determine Energy Demand using Monte Carlo Algorithms and Markov Chains (MCMC)" proposes
the prediction of energy demand in order to reduce contingencies in the operation of distribution networks in periods of greater demand, especially in systems with high prevalence of residential load, which has had considerable growth due to the use of electric stoves. The authors of this paper are: Edwin M. Garcia, Alexander Aguila T. (UPS); Idi Isaac, George W. Gonzalez, Gabriel Lopez (UPB).
