The Webometrics Ranking is the world's largest academic ranking which, since 2004, evaluates the operation of universities and research centers around the world based on its presence on the web and the impact it has generated in it.

In the latest ranking of July 2017 (beta version), Webometrics ranked Universidad Politecnica Salesiana of Ecuador (UPS) 3,756 worldwide, among over 20,000 institutions considered in the ranking. It ranked the 7th university of Ecuador.

Because of its presence on the web, UPS is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world, it ranked 91, which shows the quality in the production and management of the content for its web portal and related platforms.

This result also allowed UPS to be among the top 500 in Latin America, it ranked 433 in the region. In July, the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) also presented an increase in web visibility of the academic and research work of UPS when it included the university among the best research institutions in the world (6th institution in Ecuador and 677 in the world).

The ranking web of universities is based on four indicators that evaluate different aspects of university work and its projection in the virtual environment: visibility and online presence, number of documents and citations to them.

UPS President, Father Javier Herrán Gómez, congratulated the university community for their constant work, and spoke how this represents a benefit especially for Salesian students: "Today the web is an important element for the university's communication with its community and society. Teaching, the transfer of scientific knowledge, contact and dialogue form the communication path of the university. This result says a lot about UPS and the quality of its students and teachers, he said
