UPS student took part in a meeting held by the UN

Patricio Lozano, student of the Local Sustainable Development Management undergraduate program in our branch campus in Cuenca, attended the solemn meeting to commemorate the International Day of Indigenous Communities in the United Nations (UN) in New York, USA.

The event was held to celebrate 11 years of the UN's declaration of rights of indigenous people. Several speakers discussed the topic of migration and analyzed it from different fields. Patricio Lozano was able to make a comment and ask the speakers a question on this topic. The speakers concluded that there is still a lot to be done by governments regarding internal and external migration.

There were several meetings to discuss how to protect human rights of indigenous communities; there was also a tribute to the rights of indigenous people and their contribution to peace and sustainable development. "Indigenous people safeguard cultures and the environment. They have great linguistic and cultural diversity. Protecting their rights means protecting everyone's rights", said Lozano.

Patricio Lozano also took part in the 5th Meeting of the Kichwa Saraguro Residents in the United States that took place in the state of Wisconsin. During this meeting he received the award "Orgullo Ecuatoriano" from the American – Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce for his leadership in management and service to the community, the work he has carried out as the president of the parish of San Lucas as well as his job in strengthening the identity of Saraguros at an international level.
