The research titled "Characterization and classification of daily electricity consumption profiles: Shape factors and k-means clustering technique", carried out by professors Milton Mora, Pedro Ortiz, Xavier Serrano and Guillermo Escrivá from the Energies Research Group (GIE for its acronym in Spanish), proposes a method to classify the profiles of electricity consumption of users in different types of buildings.

The research was presented in the "3rd International Conference on Power and Renewable Energy, ICPRE 2018" of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) which was held in Berlin, Germany. Professor Xavier Serrano led the project "Mejora de la eficiencia energética en edificaciones de la zona ecuatorial de los andes" (Improvement of energy efficiency in buildings of the equatorial area of the Andes")

Professors highlighted that the characterization and classification of electricity profiles has important applications in distribution companies, such as in the definition of the specific rates by type of customer, the identification of the location of the energy sources, the detection of malfunctions and the optimization of the distribution.

Every year the Congress is attended by researchers, scientists and professors in the field of power and renewable energy. This year there were 72 representatives from 30 countries such as Canada, Mexico, Egypt, Turkey, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Australia, UK, South Africa, France, Brazil, Portugal, Lithuania, Ecuador, Romania, Poland, Algeria, Denmark, Morrocos, Colombia, Italy, Indonesia
