Members of the university's research groups on Smart Electricity Networks (GIREI for its acronym in Spanish) and Telecommunications (GITEL for its acronym in Spanish), who are currently conducting research on smart electricity networks, are working together with the Telecommunications and Computing Research Group (GIDATI for its acronym in Spanish) from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia.

The research on smart electricity networks is conducted from different angles, therefore they needed the participation of the electrical engineering and telecommunications (wireless and optical) fields in order to get the distribution of the network in the area. This will result in advanced measurement infrastructure of electric power which will allow optimal consumption, detection of faults and the creation of an efficient and reliable system.

Articles that have been written by professors in their doctorate programs will aid the research on smart electricity networks in Ecuador and Colombia which will in turn help improve the current electrical system by providing more quality and better performance to meet consumers as well as electricity company's needs.
