Every year the Colombian journal "Guillermo de Ockham", a journal on the study and research of social sciences, organizes a competition titled "Cartas a un autor/a" or Letters to an author, whose aim is to pay tribute to renowned Latin American authors. This year the chosen author was Maritza Montero from Venezuela.

Out of 400 participants, UPS student Sofia Pineda, who studies psychology, was the winner of the competition with her letter titled "Correspondencia a través de los Andes" (Mail through the Andes), which was published in the journal's website. Psychology students from Latin America took part in the competition by writing a letter to the author; the layout of the letter was: title, introduction with information about the author's life, the importance of Maritza Montero's book in psychology, the importance of her book in students' education and acknowledgment.

In her letter, Sofia Pineda writes "I believe there are many ways to improve people's lives, even the world we live in- although this may sound too romantic- and I think we can all help in several ways: by being doctors, artists, engineers, etc. However, we have chosen this path, we have a calling that encourages us to find new paths for human development from Community Psychology"

Then she adds "Specifically in Ecuador, I have determined the importance of taking into account indigenous nationalities and ancestral people who because of inequality and exclusion are separated not only from education but from the access to opportunities and necessary resources for their community development".
