Students and professors in the university's branch campus in Quito took part in the talk titled "Culture, hegemonies and globalization" which was led by professor Darwin Reyes and Wilfrido Padilla, Afro Ecuadorian social leader.

Carlos Chamorro, the mediator of the talk, said these academic activities are important since they promote dialogues and allow students to relate the contents learnt in class with our country socio economic and cultural reality.

Reyes said globalization should not be considered factual. "The talk is about how we can get involved in this process and if we don't do it ourselves, someone is going to do it for us", he said. His talk was about how to understand production processes and identify those who have the economic resources as well as individual and collective attitudes to face global processes.

Padilla said it is necessary to stop feeling victims of socioeconomic conditions, gender, culture or believes in order to generate social changes. He highlighted the importance of not forgetting the past so as to not make the same mistakes. Participants agreed that we should think about a more human like globalization instead of a dominating one, we should consider ourselves as world citizens in order to overcome inferiority complexes. "These events should also take place in other faculties and with political and social agents."
