Environmental engineering students in our branch campus in Guayaquil presented projects related to home organic waste management. The presentations were done via zoom and it was attended by Raul Alvarez, vice president of the university's campus in Guayaquil, as well as other university officials.

The projects combined the subjects of chemistry, ecology and natural resources. The aim was to present recycling methods with organic waste in order to create other products that can be used at home. "It has practically taken the entire semester because a recycling process cannot be done in one week. It needs constant monitoring", said Carmen Palacios, director of the environmental engineering undergraduate program.

The projects were:

•   Saponification from burned oil
•   Bioplastic based on fruit peels
•   Recycled paper
•   Ecological orgnic waste
•   Electric energy from renewable resources: water
•   Organic fertilizer and its application on plants
•   Making organic insecticide
•   Cleaning product based on fruit peel

Raul Alvarez stated that the current situation must be seen as an opportunity to learn new skills by using what students have learned in class. "Our students have used their potential and have presented very interesting ideas", he said.

Ailyn Abarca, first year environmental engineering student, believes the projects will help reduce pollution. "Our projects help lessen environmental pollution, especially in Ecuador, where there is not a culture of recycling waste", she stated.
