Play: Salem witches

EVENTO Presencial TIPO Cultural Quito miércoles, 30 octubre 2019

Our university’s branch campus in Quito presents the play “Las brujas de Salem” written by Arthur Miller. The play will be performed by the university’s theater group on the 23rd, 24th, 25th, 30th and 31st of October.

The story of the Salem witches was written in 1962 in Salem Massachusetts. It is the story of three young ladies that created a scandal in the small town which was full of very strict religious norms.

Synopsis: In 1692, in the small town of Salem (Massachusetts), there is a rumor that some young women have been practicing witchcraft, led by Abigail Williams. The inhabitants accuse each other and are victims of an unstoppable collective hysteria, which triggers a trial in which, one by one, the innocent victims, torn from their homes by crossed curses, fall into the trap of guilt, complaints and revenge that they themselves have caused.

This is one of the most important plays of the twentieth century, winner of the Tony Award in 1953, and its importance lies in the universality of its themes, which are still valid today: distrust, persecution, repression and ambition of power at the expense of any means.
