Students and professors from the applied anthropology undergraduate program in the university's branch campus in Quito presented the results of their four research projects during the 7th International Congress on Anthropology in Mexico City from the 11th to the 14th of September.

On the topic of "Myths, borders, cultures and violence" UPS students Natalia Pineda, Jessica Rosales and Nataly Carillo presented their research titled "Obstetric violence and political, ethnic-cultural, and sexual boundaries" which shows how there is violence in women in labor. These three students believe that a women's body becomes subjects once they abandon their private space (their homes) and move about public spaces and face violence, discrimination and exclusion.

On the topic of cultural memory and anthropology of religion, there were three presentations:

"El retorno del chamán. Historicidad y mito entre los Secoya de la Alta Amazonía Ecuatoriana" by professor Julian Garcia Labrador, PhD

"La doble vida de un árbol sagrado. El quishuar en los templos católicos y en los adoratorios andinos" by professor Alexandra Martínez, Ph.D

"Corazonando, una antropología comprometida con la vida" by professor Patricio Guerrero

Pineda, Rosales and Carrillo consider their participation in this congress to be an enriching experience where they have learned about new tools for anthropological research and have shared their knowledge with other professionals in this field.

For professor Guerrero, this event enabled a wider look into academic debates in other countries and helped appreciate research conducted by anthropology students and professors.
