On January 31st, UPS officials, professors and students, as well as people who live in nearby towns of Cayambe and Pedro Moncayo, attended the celebration of the 50th anniversary of "Radio Mensaje" 1590 radio frequency.

This radio station was founded in 1967 in order to strengthen the development of indigenous sectors, its programs disseminate information regarding interesting topics for people who live in surrounding areas. The aim is also to appreciate the kiwcha language which is still used by indigenous communities.

One of the advocates of the radio station, UPS president Javier Herran, wrote in his book titled "Trabajando con la gente. Comunicación, acción, participación en las comunidades indígenas de los andes ecuatorianos" that social means of communication, especially the radio, are used to create relationships. "From the kiwcha culture, the Andean rural development incorporated social communication as a new agora where Andean orality is produced and knowledge / action is integrated as a message, public opinion, news, communication action", he said.

The celebration was organized by the communication undergraduate program in the university's branch campus in Quito. The event was attended by UPS president Javier Herran, the vice president of the university's branch campus in Quito Jose Juncosa, the director of the communication program Maria del Carmen Ramirez, the director of Radio Mensaje Pablo Teran, the founder of the radio Isaias Barriga, Dolores Silva, Marcelo Mora and Fernando Guaman, the director of the salesian community in Cayambe.

Fernando Guaman considers himself a successor of the work done by two great people, Father Isaias and Father Javier Herran. "This work has enabled the development of communities in production, education and health."

Father Herrán said that in "Radio Mensaje" the strength of the commitment to literacy and local development have been complemented with the same purpose: the happiness of the residents of Cayambe. "Radio Mensaje has created a model of human development formed with feelings of affection, compassion, humanity and tenderness of men and women of indigenous communities and professionals of communication and development," he said.

Pablo Terán, UPS professor, indicated that it is a community environment that is part of the daily life of the inhabitants of this area. The Asociación Biovida de Cayambe presented a commemorative plaque to Radio Mensaje for opening a space for communication and dissemination with its program titled "Luciérnaga Comunitaria", which disseminates agro ecology topics.
