A Neurosensory Stimulation Room for the elderly
In the "Miguel Leon" nursing home in the city of Cuenca, UPS students Fernando Duchi and Enrique Benalcazar from the electronic engineering undergraduate program, donated a Neurosensory Stimulation Room for those who study in the University for the Elderly (Universidad del adulto mayor).
The students explained that multisensory stimulation in elderly people is an effective practice that helps train the mind and motor skills through elements that stimulate people's senses, these spaces are also known as "Snoezelen". "Initially, the use of these rooms was mainly aimed at children with learning difficulties, those who had difficulties to explore their surroundings. Recently research has been carried out on the implementation of these rooms in people with cognitive impairments of moderate to severe pathology, neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's, Dementia, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, bipolar disorder, and others ". they said.
Monica Huerta, UPS research and professor, said the project was possible thanks to the work of these university students, who decided to support people who need it most.
"Multisensory stimulation systems generate positive responses through relaxation and stimulation therapies in an attractive space for the elderly, which relate to the variety of stimuli provided by the multisensory room, a great contribution of the Salesian Polytechnic University to society in Cuenca" said Saúl Chalco, president of the University for the Elderly.
Finally, through this project, the university intends that patients improve the relationship with their social and personal environment, the room provides an atmosphere of well-being and relaxation, for both the patient and the specialist
