The Abya Yala university library opened in "El Giron" campus in Quito. The new library will hold cultural events, forums, talks and presentation of books published by the Abya Yala university publishing house.

In 1975, Father Juan Bottasso founded Abya Yala; he said "although libraries and publishing houses are in crisis due to the use of electronic means, I believe that a good book will always survive." UPS president Father Javier Herran said "a university library is the best example of culture in a community. I hope this becomes a meeting place to think and dream because every book represents hope."

The library has books published by UPS professors, the catalog of the Abya Yala publishing house, books on anthropology, history, archeology, ecology, education, communication and literature. Milagros Aguirre, general editor of Abya Yala, said the library wants to put people closer to different worlds.

Florabla Aguilar, editor of the journal Sophia, said the library is a place to connect education, knowledge, science and an efficient place for research, learning and creation of academic groups. "A university without a library is a university without a past or a future.

The event was attended by Father Angel Lazo, respresentatives of Universidad Tecnológica Equinoccial, Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar and FLACSO. During this first week, they presented books about the mountain region, the coast and the amazon. They also presented business projects from the university's coworking StartUPS.
