Students and professors of the anthropology, local management and theology undergraduate programs, along with the "Estudios Ecologistas del Tercer Mundo" Institute organized a meeting titled "Diaologo en defensa de la casa común"; the aim of this meeting was to present proposals based on ecology, religion and spirituality in regard to protecting the environment. The meeting was held in "El Giron" campus in Quito.

The meeting was inspired by Pope Francis' Encyclical (2015), which is articulated around the concept of integral ecology in which the basic relationships of the human being are developed: with God, with oneself, with others and with the creation. From this premise, the speakers reflected on environmental pollution, mining and oil exploitation, as well as the defense of territories, water and food sovereignty against industrial agriculture.

The speakers were Monsignor Eugenio Arellano, President of the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference; Joan Martínez of Political Ecology from Barcelona, Spain (teleconference); Verónica Loor, director the Theology undergraduate program; Mónica Maher, who teaches Zen in the United States and Laura Santillán from the Agato community. The speakers believe that a change of mentality is necessary for protecting the planet.

"Relationships with people are more valuable than the accumulation of money, protecting nature is more important than the accumulation of capital", said Arellano. Loor spoke about Ecotheology and said "we should have a different perspective than that of the industrial revolution and think about being people who take care of and protect the environment."
