Since October 7, "El Girón" campus in our branch campus in Quito became an area of peace and humanitarian shelter, where more than 3,500 indigenous people from the Ecuadorian highlands were given food and a place to rest. With the help of the Student Federation (FEUPS) more than 100 people were organized, including students, professors and administrative staff, in emergency care brigades to respond to the country's crisis situation.

The people, from 32 communities in the country, were in the coliseum, corridors and tents of "El Girón" campus, children were received by teachers and students of Pedagogy and Psychology. They created an environment of distraction and fun, which was later followed by mass celebrated by Jaime Chela, director of the University Pastoral.

"The response of people has touched us, thousands of donations have been received from generous people who have not stopped arriving since the first day we welcomed our indigenous brothers," says Karla Altamirano, president of FEUPS. We have asked people to stop donating food and clothing because the university is on the verge of its capacity; surgical gloves and medications have now been requested.

In the afternoon, the Archbishop of Quito, Monsignor Alfredo Espinoza accompanied by Fr. Javier Herrán, said that the government has requested the Episcopal Conference to be part of the dialogue in the mediation processes. "We will be at these tables as pastors committed to our people," said Monsignor Espinoza.

In an official announcement, Javier Herran (President of Universidad Politecnica Salesiana), Fernando Ponce (President of PUCE) and Florinella Muñoz (President of EPN) and Fernando Sempertegui (President of Universidad Central), suggested the subsidies go to help the production of indigenous people.

"We believe this proposal will bring peace, justice and solidarity to Ecuador…", they said.
