Jorge de Juan Fernández, professor of philosophy and religion at Universidad de León and priest of the diocese of León (Spain), was part of the talk on "COVID-19 and its impact on education" organized by the early and basic education undergraduate programs in the university's campus in Cuenca. The purpose of this event was to present a reflection on the current situation of education in this time of health emergency caused by COVID-19 worldwide.

The speaker talked about the unexpected arrival of this virus, which involved education and provided an opportunity to see which parts of it are working well, which parts are not and therefore urgently need to be changed, and parts that force some aspects to be modified regularly, but that in the long run can become harmful to education.

Fernández explained that this new education system opened a digital gap, with causes such as: infrastructure, skills and accessibility, which are related to socioeconomic level, geographical area, public services and age, that is, many people still cannot get used to this system due to these circumstances.

In addition, statistical data revealed that during the months of March and April 73.8% of the student population was affected by the closure of schools and colleges. 1,292 million students from 186 countries. Finally, he indicated that 50% do not have a computer and 43% do not have internet at home.

In conclusion, he stated that it is understood that education in the time of COVID-19 has been seriously affected and that it will take time in order to return to normality.
