New fiber optic-based data transmission systems have become the most acceptable communication method for transferring video, audio, voice, and data, especially high-speed communications.

Therefore, the Telecommunications Research Group (GITEL for its acronym in Spanish. Grupo de Investigación en Telecomunicaciones (GITEL)) at Universidad Politecnica Salesiana's branch campus in Cuenca, with the support of TelecomAustro Company, is working on the installation of fiber optic networks. 

This project is part of the agreement that GITEL has with strategic allies in the local industry, the aim is to provide an optimal data network to improve connection to the cloud for all members of the university community, who will have at their disposal 24 fiber optic strands with GIPON technology that will be used as ports and have been placed in strategic points.

The implementation of a GPON Network (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) means innovation and development, as this service is expected to be of great help to the university community and its contribution to strengthening graduation and research projects in telecommunications.

Two graduation projects will study the performance of communication through fiber optics and the quality of service of hybrid networks. Members of GITEL, thanked the contribution and support received by the University to carry out this type of social projects.
