UPS professors and students attended a talk on intellectual property and copyright

UPS and the Ecuadorian Institute of Intellectual Property (IEPI) held the talk titled "General information on intellectual property and copyright, and proposals for the organic law of social economy of knowledge, creativity and innovation".
The talk led by Santiago Cevallos Mena, Director of IEPI was aimed at professors as well as students majoring in Management and Leadership, Social Communication, Biotechnology of Natural Resources, and Business Administration.
Santiago Cevallos spoke about an author's intellectual property, which involves literary, artistic, scientific and industrial work. He explained that copyright refers to the judicial system through which the authors are given moral and economic rights of their work.
He explained that there are three elements to keep in mind: the author who is a natural person with an intellectual creation, the titleholder who may be a natural or legal person that has the rights to some work, and finally the work itself which is an intellectual and original creation that is susceptible to reproduction. Speaking about the time a copyright lasts, the expert said they last a lifetime as well as 70 years after death.
In this regard, there are also rights that are granted not for the creation, but for the dialogue of the work, such as artists, interpreters and producers. Finally, Cevallos spoke about the new reforms in the Organic law of social economy of knowledge, creativity and innovation. The proposal is based in the INGENIOS code which aims to change the guidelines of a capitalist stance for social economy with an inclusive, democratic vision based on the intensive use of infinite resources to recover the sense of knowledge: public, free and open.
