The IEEE student branch from Cuenca won first place in the "IEEE Regional Student Paper Contest", Electric category, with the paper "Study of the different methods used for the optimal placement of compensators in Electric Power System" which was written by Cristhian Quezada and Jaime Torres.

The 2016 Regional Branches Meeting (RRR2016), held in Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral ESPOL and Universidad Católica Santiago de Guayaquil UCSG, is a prestigious event that takes place annually in different Latin American and Caribbean countries. The aim of RRR is to integrate students from every region to facilitate exchanges, knowledge and other educational activities.

Additionally, it improves the dissemination of technology, learning skills; it also facilitates the entrance to the labor market for young professionals and it promotes IEEE activities in the overall community.

Members of the IEEE-UPS-Cuenca branch attended conferences on engineering and human sciences. They also won other competitions during this event, like second place in the "Photo Contest" and third place in the "Selfie Contest".

The IEEE student branch from the university's branch in Cuenca was the only institution that received an award three times, making it one the most active participants.
