“Journalism and law”: a masterclass on ethics and law on communication

The communication major in our branch campus in Guayaquil organized a masterclass titled “Journalism and law”, which was led by Cesar Garcia Rodriguez, a business lawyer specialized in tax law and civil disputes. The presentation stressed the importance of law in the exercise of journalism and its impact on freedom of expression.
Rodríguez explained how the legislation protects the work of communicators and guarantees access to information. He stressed that freedom of expression is a right recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and that the right to communication allows citizens to be informed and share knowledge. He explained that journalists must adhere to a code of deontology based on principles such as truthfulness, objectivity and contrast of data.
The event gave students the opportunity to understand the close relationship between journalism and law, highlighting the importance of knowing the current regulations to guarantee ethics and professional responsibility in the media.
There should be continuous training in legal matters, a well informed journalist not only protects his work, but also strengthens credibility and journalism in society.
