4th Conference on Communication

On the 26th and 27th of November, students and professors from the communication undergraduate program in our branch campus in Quito held the 4th Communication Conference "JORCOM" titled "Citizen participation. Democracy and communication in contexts of uncertainty". The conference was part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the communication undergraduate program in Quito.
The speakers were professors from universities in Chile, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Spain and Ecuador. The first conference was "Communication and transparency of information to create citizens with social responsibility", it was presented by Amparo Moreno Sarda, professor at Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona.
Moreno explained that communication is horizontal, equitable, it relates nearness and distance, it gives historical meaning to life as it takes into account experiences from the individual and groups to create a communication network. "The contributions of communication professionals are in the transparency and quality of the information in order to think cooperatively and with social responsibility and thus build equitable and sustainable democracies," she said.
Andrés López, presented the topic "Journalism as a professional activity to strengthen the processes of transparency and citizen participation". He addressed the Law of Transparency and Access to Public Information and stressed that public officials must facilitate information. "They are not doing us a favor; we have the power to demand that. Unfortunately, in Ecuador there is no permanent exercise, there are sanctions for people who do not provide information, but nobody controls this," he stated.
Other topics were: Transparency, democracy and communication, politics and youth participation towards social change; presentation of the results of the Transparency Index and the Municipalities of Ecuador; citizen participation and literature in times of uncertainty. The sessions were broadcast live by Centro de Medios Virtuales Infinito Digital.
