Environmental engineering students in our branch campus in Guayaquil visited “Las Iguanas” landfill in order to strengthen and reinforce their education by directly seeing how the landfill operates and learning about waste management.

Students were guided by professors Marcelo Berrones and Xavier Estrella, and a team of experts at the landfill. “Students learned about the final disposal of household solid waste in Guayaquil, this visit enabled them to consolidate the knowledge learned in class and propose new projects, such as the use of anaerobic decomposition gases to obtain electrical energy", said professor Estrella.

Students also learned about environmentally friendly methods such as the use of alternative energies, treatments and controls of leachates and gases. They saw the implementation techniques of a Biogas plant for the Treatment of methane gas that is generated from the decomposition of garbage that is placed in the cells in order to help reduce climate change worldwide.

María Ángeles Montero, a sixth-semester student, was happy to be doing field activities that allow her to prepare for her professional life. “This activity allows us to deepen our knowledge and reinforce the subjects we have learned, they also help us become familiar with the work environment and be ready to start working,” she said.
