Intercultural meeting for salesian students

University as well as government officials presided this cultural event which showed the university's commitment with indigenous communities.

UPS students from the coast, sierra and the amazon attended the cultural event which took place on October 2nd in UPS-Quito's university residence. Over 300 students showed the richness of their communities and gave others the opportunity to learn from them.

The university residence is a project that began in 2011, its aim is to help indigenous young people from the Ecuadorian Andes and the Amazon with their education. 
UPS president Javier Herran presided the ceremony along with María del Pilar Troya, vice minister of the secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT), Father Maffeo Panteghini, director of the residence, Jose Juncosa, UPS-Quito Vice president, Sebastian Granda, director of the intercultural education major, and Irina Jaramillo, president of the students federation (FEUPS). Bernardo Salgado, international relations secretary, Lola Vasquez, director of community involvement, professors, campus secretaries and administrative staff also attended. 

Mass was celebrated by Father Panthegini along with Father Herran, Father Marcelo Farfan and Father Pio Baschirotto.
For the cultural performances, first there was a typical dance from Esmeraldas called "Marimba" performed by the following students: Mariuxi Márquez, Antonella Yépez, Juan Pazmiño and Eduardo Cortez. Then, an "achuar" dance performed by Venancio Sanchim, Roberto Wisum and Etelvina Tukup, and finally a "shuar" dance performed by Tsenkush Leonardo, Utitiaj William,  Naikiai Paul, Esac Nelson and Jintiach Ramiro.

Mariuxi Marquez, a computer engineering student, Naikiai Jintiach, Paul Etsa and Edwin Vichicela Ushcu, management and leadership students, spoke on behalf of all the students and thanked UPS for helping them study at the university. 

Segundo Farinango, Luis Jarrín, Manuel Vargas, Carlos Vásconez, and Manuel Tipanluis played instrumental music. Luis Daniel Imbaquingo and Dolores Laso spoke about their education as intercultural professors. Finally, the UPS-Quito Vice President thanked all the intercultural students for attending and for their effort in building the university's identity.
