Tradition, culture and ancestral knowledge, "Inti Raymi of Universities and Diversities"
The Inti Raymi festival, an ancient Inca tradition that pays tribute to the sun and “Pachamama”, has become an opportunity for academic and ancestral knowledge to converge. Since 2022, Ecuador's higher education institutions have organized the "Inti Raymi of Universities and Diversities," an event that combines ritual ceremonies, artistic expressions, and debates on topics such as traditional medicine, sustainable agriculture, and the Andean Cosmovision.
This year, Universidad Católica de Cuenca is in charge of the celebration. University officials, faculty, students, and the university community attended the opening ceremony and shared a “Chakana” adorned with fruits and flowers, as well as traditional foods and drinks related to this holiday. As part of the cultural agenda, they presented the documentary "Tiempos de tierra, el legado de los Raymis". A production that captures the significance of these ancestral celebrations. They also presented a graphic exhibition that showcased the value of traditional knowledge, marking the closing of the event with a heartfelt tribute to Andean culture.
During the program, there were also keynote speeches and the presentation of projects related to agroecology and intercultural health. Yaroslava Robles and Paola Ingavélez presented "Traditional Medicine and Healing", they analyzed the progress and challenges of the Intercultural Health Law in Ecuador.
Universidad Catolica de Cuenca announced that Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), will be responsible for organizing the next edition of the University Inti Raymi in 2026. For the closing ceremony, there were performances by the UPS “Tumipampa” traditional dance group, the Pumapungo musical group, and other groups.
