The New Materials and Transformation Process Research Group in our branch campus in Cuenca, alongside the Cancer Institute (SOLCA for its acronym in Spanish) have produced implants and personalized bone structures to help improve people’s quality of life.

The research project is made up by professors and students in the field of mechanical engineering and doctors from SOLCA and Hospital del Rio. Together they design, validate, manufacture and implant personalized prosthesis. They have currently operated 4 patients with cranial reconstruction.

Manufacturing is based on an analysis of patients’ anatomy, which minimizes risk during surgery. The model of the different implants is made with modern equipment from the university’s laboratories.

UPS researchers monitor each of the cases along with doctors who provide information of patients with different bone disorders.

This project shows that scientific production can focus on the human side, generate science thought about the needs of people; for UPS, working in the field of medicine is an important achievement, since the university community has the necessary technology and highly trained professionals.

The next step in the project is to move to a second phase and that different public and private institutions work together to create a Specialized Center to obtain prostheses at the service of the less favored sectors of the population
