Students created a biomedical device to improve care for patients in palliative care
Students majoring in Biomedicine in our branch campus Cuenca created a biomedical device for lifting people in palliative care for the Cancer Patient Care Foundation (FASEC for its acronym in Spanish), as part of an academic research project and the humanitarian mission of serving society through social service projects.
The device was created to mitigate musculoskeletal injuries suffered by healthcare personnel due to the constant mobilization and lifting of patients. Its aim is to safeguard the health of medical and nursing staff by providing comfort and safety.
The project responds to a specific need identified during technical visits to the foundation, where students were able to learn firsthand about the conditions and challenges faced by caregivers and patients in vulnerable situations.
Final-year students Alan Ochoa and Diego Encalada led the project along with support from their professors and research groups. They applied their knowledge in biomechanical design, medical electronics, and ergonomics, creating a functional prototype that was tested at FASEC facilities.
Professors and students from the Biomedicine major, along with representatives from the Foundation, formally presented the device at the FASEC facilities. During the ceremony, Sofía Vanegas, Director of the Foundation, stressed the value of the work carried out by the University, emphasizing the importance of social commitment and the application of academic knowledge to serve the community as part of a truly comprehensive education.
UPS has always been at the forefront of technology, contributing science and technological innovation to the service of health and human dignity. It educates professionals capable of generating real solutions to the social challenges of our environment.
