Webinar about Ecuadorian Composer Gerardo Guevara

The university community in our branch campus in Quito and the overall public learned more about the Ecuadorian composer Gerardo Guevara, orchestra and choir director, as well as a pianist. He is considered an important link for contemporary music.

The speaker was Eduardo Florencia, a pianist and member of the Ecuadorian Symphony Orchestra. The webinar was organized by the culture salesian group. Florencia spoke about his friendship with Guevara and said Guevara's technique is based on popular writing with good use of techniques known as cosmogonia andina (Andean cosmogony).

"His compositions are loaded with emotional, existential, philosophical and technical content, very different from Western music which has linear time. Cosmogony has a cyclical time. Its language has clarity because it prioritizes words and not sound abstractions. Saying meaningful things by using the precise terms is part of our identity because we are emotional beings, words go directly to the heart", said Florencia.

He ended his talk by saying that Guevara's language is full of meanings and symbolism, which challenges us to improve music writing in the country and above all have the personality needed to make our way in these complex and competitive settings. The talk was broadcast on Facebook @CulturaUPS
