Students will create an organic garden
Freshmen students majoring in biotechnology in the university's campus in Guayaquil are creating an organic garden by applying what they have learned in biology and chemistry class.
The activity is part of a project aimed at incorporating knowledge from different subjects, "this will allow us to learn more about our major, to know what we have to do and the process of certain technical aspects", said Ricardo Rivas, a student.
Students analyze cell morphology in various types of plants, which have three types of treatment: with fertilizer, chemical fertilizer and without fertilizer. This activity is carried out under a microscope and a stereoscope. "Once the analysis is done at the end of the semester, students must submit a report", said José Luis Ballesteros, director of the Biotechnology undergraduate program.
Monitoring will be carried out for two months in order to know the behavior of plants in different environments. Thus, there will be three phases: when it is planted, when the plant is established and during the harvest. Also, a microscopy analysis will be carried out to study the microorganisms present in the seeding land and the water with which the garden will be treated. "This time we planted vegetables and ornamental plants," said Ballesteros.
