The university's Smart Electricity Networks Research Group (GIREI for its acronym in Spanish) presented four articles in the I&D journal which is an annex to Universidad Tecnologica de Panama.

For the research carried out in 2019, GIREI incorporated the needs and requirements of electrical networks in order to support the concept of smart cities which will bring new services in Ecuador in the next few years, for instance electric vehicles, internet of things with 5G, hybrid solutions of WiFi networks.

The scientific production:

•    Despliegue óptimo georreferenciado de estaciones de carga vehicular pública considerando capacidad de flujo y distancias máximas habilitantes. Written by Miguel Campaña – Esteban Inga

•    Despliegue óptimo de redes ópticas para comunicaciones en redes eléctricas inteligentes. By Milton Ruiz – Esteban Inga

•    Modelo resiliente de redes de distribución considerando flujos de potencia basado en teoría de grafos. By Darwin López – Wilson Pavón

•    Estado del Arte de conmutación de líneas de transmisión con análisis de contingencias. By Paúl Masache – Diego Carrión.

Dr. Esteban Inga, coordinator of GIREI; said that "the projects that have been created seek to impact society to solve current problems at the level of municipalities, the goals include consulting and future applied research projects, incorporating electric micro networks in vulnerable areas to increase the percentage of electrification; these initiatives are associated with other Salesian Universities of El Salvador (Don Bosco University), Brazil (Unileste) and Japan (Salesio - Salesian Polytechnic - Tokyo)"
