Human Rights and Means of Communication

The university held a talk on Human Rights and Means of Communication with the support and participation of communication students from our branch campus in Cuenca.

Fernando Moscoso, vice president of our branch campus in Cuenca, welcomed all the participants and thanked the municipality of Cuenca and the "observatorio ciudadano de la comunicación" for their support in the organization of this event.

Professor Juan Carlos Lopez spoke about human rights of women basically in messages in the media, he explained about the advertising that is exhibited in the media where many of them are considered sexist, he presented countless advertisements both on radio, television and in the press and asked participants to identify the advertisements which are considered sexist.

During his presentation, he commented that we must know about this issue to make critical observations of the messages in the media. The question is, what are those messages telling us in their content, and how are we perceiving them.

Men are still considered to have higher value, hierarchy than women. In our society, this tendency to value men more than women is still present. In this scenario, women have a disadvantage compared to men in whatever activity they do. He finished by saying that it is important to continue working hard to reduce the existing gap between the value of women and men and to seek true equity in relations between them.
