On June, 21st, Universidad Politecnica Salesiana's branch in Guayaquil, the National Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT) and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights began the first university academic period in Guayaquil's detention center.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Justice, Ledy Zuñiga, the Governor of Guayas, Julio Cesar Quiñonez, and the director of the business administration faculty in Guayaquil, Fabian Villacres.

This project will give 80 people in the detention center the opportunity to continue their university studies, "we are very thankful for this opportunity and we will show everyone that we want to become better people", said one of the students.

Students will study either accounting or business administration; the study plan started with English and soon other subjects will incorporated into the plan.

For Fabian Villacres, this is an opportunity to improve people's lives once they leave the detention center, "students have been given scholarships that will help them finish their studies.
According the Organic Law, Article 704 says that detention centers will foster higher education through agreements with institutes or public and private universities. "This is real social reintegration, it is second opportunity", said Ledy Zuñiga.
