Two projects presented by students from the university's branch in Cuenca were acknowledged during the 2016 Research Awards Fair held by the National Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT for its acronym in Spanish). The aim of this ceremony, held in Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana in Quito, is to motivate scientific and technological creativity among university students.

The winners will get a scholarship to study a postgraduate program in one of the best universities in the world. The first project from UPS to be awarded is titled "Diseño y desarrollo de un sistema inalámbrico para monitorear los temblores en pacientes que padecen Parkinson" ("Design and development of a wireless system to monitor tremors in patients with Parkinson's disease"), by Marco Bravo and Alexander Bermeo from the university's branch in Cuenca. This project, which analyzes parameters such as motor skills, the tremors, the degree of the disease and its frequency in order to determine the amount of medication, was presented in the "Health and Wellbeing" category.

The second winning project from UPS is titled "Uso del sistema telemétrico para medir humedad, nivel y clima" (Use of the telemetric system to measure humidity, level and climate") by Jairo Gallardo from the university's branch in Guayaquil. This project, which competed in the Information and Communication Technologies Category, measures variables in large plantations and saves resources such as water. It works with solar energy and shows the condition of the plantations in real time, it can also schedule alerts through text messages.

The categories were: Social memory and cultural heritage; Agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine; Education sciences; Mathematics and statistics; civil engineering and architecture; engineering and industry; health & wellbeing; marine resources and fisheries; communication and information technologies.

Here are four more projects from UPS that participated:

• Design of a telecommunications infrastructure for the transmission of vital signs. By David Chandy

• Social Robots: A technological alternative to preserve and transmit legends and oral traditions of Ecuador. By Melissa Montalvo

• Use of artificial vision algorithms as a support system to determine the progression of repigmentation of the skin in patients with vitiligo. By Fernando Chica

• Design and implementation of a cleaning prototype through ultrasound. By Jhonny Núñez and Enrique Villamar.

Professors and researchers also participated with their papers about "Endemic Genetic Resources" within the framework of the National "No to Biopiracy" Policy. The 4 winning projects were awarded amounts of up to US $ 5,000 that will be used to generate scientific publications, scholarships for masters degrees, medical specialties, doctorates.
